Profile

Before joining AusVet, Ben had a mixed career in private practice and government, both in Australia and the United Kingdom. He has extensive experience in disease investigation and control programs, and the development of information systems.

After initially working in artificial breeding in the wheatbelt in Western Australia, he moved into mixed private practice, and developed an interest in herd health programs. After working in Victoria and South Australia, Ben ended up in the Northern Territory, where he developed an increasing interest in animal health programs and research. He joined the Department of Agriculture in Western Australia and worked on disease surveillance and research programs in the Pastoral region of the state.

Whilst working in the United Kingdom during 2001, Ben became involved in the management of the surveillance and freedom program for Foot-and-Mouth Disease in the North East of England. During this time he developed an interest in creating information systems to match the needs of the users, and the use of geographic information systems to enhance understanding of disease and improve disease control and resource allocation.

On his return to Australia, he rejoined the Department of Agriculture in Western Australia, based in Broome. He joined AusVet as a consultant in 2006 and has been a Partner since 2012.

Ben graduated from Murdoch University with a Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Biology) in 1992 and completed his Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery in 1994. Ben enrolled in the first intake of the Master of Veterinary Public Health Management at Sydney University, graduating in 2006 with a dissertation on modelling disease spread. Ben became a Member of the Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in 2005, by examination in Epidemiology. He has recently been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy from Murdoch University for his thesis on "Understanding and predicting the influence of animal movement on the spread of transboundary animal diseases".

A growing interest in delivering high availability systems at affordable prices for the global livestock industries has led Ben to investigate and implement a number of cloud based data systems. He is now an Amazon Web Services Certified Solutions Architect.
